John Primrose is Professor of Surgery at the University of Southampton, a post he has held since 1994. He trained in the West of Scotland after which he held academic posts at the University of Leeds. His main research interest is in the biology and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer. Clinically his service has been at the forefront of extending the scope of cancer surgery, especially for cancer affecting the liver. He is a NIHR Senior Investigator and holds an ACCEA Platinum award for service to the NHS.

John has had a long-standing interest in peptide hormones and growth factors in gastrointestinal cancer, which persist to this day. He is the Chief Investigator of numerous clinical trials, mainly funded from CRUK and NIHR. Surgery at Southampton is academically successful with several former academic trainees now assuming professorial positions. There are currently three clinical lecturers funded by CRUK and NIHR, in addition to Clinical Training Fellowships from the MRC and CRUK.

John is the immediate Past President of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland representing the interests of surgeons nationally. He was the Director of the successful Wessex Comprehensive Research Network and currently Chairs the National Cancer Institute Upper Gastrointestinal Clinical Studies Group and the NICE Guidelines Committee on Pancreas Cancer.
