Samuel J Machin is a Professor of Haematology at University College London, a Consultant Haematologist at University College London Hospital since 1980, Head of the Haemostasis Research Unit at University College London and Medical Director of the The Doctors Laboratory UK (Sonic Healthcare). Over the last 30 years he has published more than 300 papers in prime review journals and supervised 30 MD/PhD students. His research interests are primarily in haemostasis and platelet disorders, particularly the primary antiphospholipid syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. He also has an interest in laboratory automation, evaluating new laboratory equipment prior to market and as Chairman of the British Committee for Standards in Haematology and Chairman of the International Council for Standardisation in Haematology and has been involved in producing evidence based guidelines and recommendations in all aspects of laboratory haematology practise. He is also involved in the basic development leading on to clinical trials and clinical application after licence of new antithrombotic and anti platelet agents.

He has previously been the President of the International Society for Laboratory Haematology, President of the British Society of Haemostasis and Thrombosis, President of the British Society of Haematology and on the Editorial Board of several international journals including the International Journal of Laboratory Haematology and is presently Associate Editor of the Journal of Thrombosis and haemostasis.
